Migrate from Odoo to Apragya: Moving Modules, Masters and Open Items Without a Gap

For businesses on Odoo, community or hosted, that want Indian compliance and AI agents without maintaining their own modules, moved at a clean month start.

People who migrate from Odoo often like its breadth. What they tire of is the upkeep: custom modules to maintain, localisation to keep current, and upgrades that need a partner each time.

Odoo is an open-source business suite with many apps, used by companies that want to shape the software themselves. If you have a strong in-house or partner team and your customisations are stable, staying on Odoo can make sense.

This guide explains what to export, how Odoo modules map to Apragya apps, an illustrative example and the checks that make the switch safe.

How to migrate from Odoo: the short answer

Odoo lets you export records from most list views to a spreadsheet, choosing the fields you want. That is the usual route for a move: contacts, products, chart of accounts, employees, then open invoices, stock on hand and balances as at your cut-over date.

Custom modules and custom fields need a decision each: carry them as custom fields in Apragya, map them to standard fields, or leave them in an archive export.

Switch at a month start, after GST returns for the earlier month are ready from Odoo, and run both systems side by side until stock and receivables agree.

  1. List every Odoo module you use and the Apragya app that replaces it.
  2. Choose a cut-over date at a month or quarter start.
  3. Export contacts, products, accounts and employees from list views.
  4. Decide what happens to each custom field.
  5. Export open invoices, bills, stock by location and the trial balance.
  6. Import, then match counts and totals.
  7. Run in parallel for a few weeks and then archive Odoo.

What an unplanned Odoo data migration costs

Orphaned custom fields

Fields nobody listed disappear from reports after the move.

Duplicate contacts

Companies and people exported separately are imported twice.

Stock by the wrong place

Quantities moved without their location.

Split GST months

A mid-month switch leaves returns in two systems.

An example: a furniture maker in Jodhpur

Take an illustrative maker with sales, inventory, purchase, manufacturing and accounting in Odoo, plus three custom fields for wood type, finish and export market.

The move checklist, two weeks before cut-over

  • ContactsCompanies and people merged, GSTINs checked.Done
  • ProductsHSN codes and units reviewed.Done
  • Bills of materialComponents re-entered for the top 40 designs.Checked
  • Custom fieldsWood type, finish and market set as custom fields.Ready
  • Open invoicesTaken on the evening before cut-over.Pending
  • Stock by locationCounted and exported on the last day.Pending
Everything that does not change daily was ready two weeks early.

On cut-over day only the open invoices and stock were left, and both were imported by noon. The custom fields showed on product records as before, and the first production order used a bill of material that had been checked against the old one.

How Odoo data migration works in Apragya

Step 1 of 5

Preview each export

See headers and sample rows before any record is written.

  1. Preview each export: See headers and sample rows before any record is written.
  2. Map the fields: Odoo field names are matched to Apragya fields, custom ones included.
  3. Shared masters: Contacts, products and employees load once for every app.
  4. Stock by warehouse: Opening quantities arrive per location.
  5. Match totals: Compare counts, stock value and receivables with Odoo.

Switching from Odoo to another ERP: what changes

Odoo gives you the code; Apragya gives you a maintained platform. With Apragya, Indian GST, TDS and payroll rules are kept current in the product, and changes to your forms are made through configuration and custom fields rather than code.

Getting started

  1. Write down every Odoo module and custom field you use.
  2. Export contacts first and try the import preview.
  3. Settle the custom field plan with the people who use them.
  4. Import open items and stock on cut-over day.
  5. Compare totals weekly during the parallel run.

A written module list, done in an afternoon, prevents most surprises later.

Moving from Odoo, answered

Can we export everything from Odoo?
Most list views can be exported to a spreadsheet with the fields you choose. Very large or technical data may need a database export by whoever hosts your Odoo.
What happens to our custom modules?
Each is replaced by an Apragya app, configuration or custom fields. Logic that is unique to you can often be rebuilt as a workflow or an agent.
Do we lose history?
Closed history usually stays in an Odoo archive export. Open items and balances move.
How long should the parallel run be?
Two to four weeks is typical, or one full month if you close books monthly.
What does it cost to start?
The free plan covers up to 3 users with CRM, HR and Vendor Onboarding and 1,000 AI Credits a month. Starter is INR 3,999 a month for up to 10 users, with CRM and HR plus a choice of apps such as Sales and POS, Inventory, Payroll, Purchase and Payables, Support and Manufacturing. Pro is INR 7,999 a month for up to 25 users with every enterprise app, including Finance and Accounting, plus 5,000 AI Credits, single sign-on and audit logs.
